Calligraphy Inspired Blackwork
This set of pieces was thrown with American Porcelain and decorated with black slip. The black slip produces high contrast with the stark white of the clay body. The decorations are chaotic and elegant at the same time by including both long breaking strokes, but also splashes and streaks of thrown stain. The pieces decorated with this method begin as highly technically and precise forms, creating contrast between the form's precision and chaotic decoration. Strokes of black slip are inspired by Chinese calligraphy, and the artist’s Chinese heritage.

This piece is a tall bottle shape with black slip brushed upwards along the form. The shape is intended to imply motion and give the tall slender piece both volume and contrast to its extreme shape.

This vase contrasts an extremely simple cylindrical form with chaotic blackwork. The cylinder’s simplicity draws eyes to the energy added by the black slip.

A tall bottle form and sibling to [1 of 5]. This piece adds a twist to the slip and has a slightly more bulbous form.

Calligraphy Inspired Blackwork [5 of 5], 2024
This large porcelain bowl was commissioned by a client. It features six thick brushstrokes and five thin brushstrokes, to represent 65 years. The strokes were paintstakingly hand applied with black slip and continue around the form. The interior features a single splatter of black slip to add to contrast to the stark white interior of the porcelain bowl.
